The Twenty-third Sunday after Pentecost
Epistle Phil 3:17-21; 4:1-3 Douay-Rheims

Brethren, be ye followers of me, and observe them who walk so as you have our model. For many walk, of whom I have told you often (and now tell you weeping), that they are enemies of the cross of Christ; whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame; who mind earthly things. But our conversation is in heaven, from whence also we look for the Savior, our Lord Jesus Christ, Who will reform the body of our lowness, made like to the body of His glory, according to the operation whereby also He is able to subdue all things unto Himself. Therefore, my brethren, dearly beloved, and most desired, my joy and my crown: so stand fast in the Lord, my dearly beloved. I beg of Evodia, and I beseech Syntyche, to be of one mind in the Lord: and I entreat thee also, my sincere companion, help those women who have labored with me in the Gospel, with Clement and the rest of my fellow laborers, whose names are in the book of life.

Gospel Mt 9:18-26 Douay-Rheims (also Mk 5:21-43)

AT that time, as Jesus was speaking to the multitudes, behold a certain ruler came up, and adored Him, saying: Lord, my daughter is even now dead; but come lay Thy hand upon her, and she shall live. And Jesus, rising up, followed him, with His disciples. And behold a woman, who was troubled with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind Him, and touched the hem of His garment. For she said within herself: If I shall touch only His garment, I shall be healed. But Jesus turning and seeing her, said: Be of good heart, daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour. And when Jesus was come into the house of the ruler, and saw the minstrels and the multitude making a tumult. He said: Give place; for the girl is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed Him to scorn. And when the multitude was put forth. He went in and took her by the hand. And the maid arose. And the fame thereof went abroad into all that country.

Have Faith, and the Miracle will happen
October 2005

A miracle happens when we have the following ingredients in our life's; fervent prayer, deep humility, life of penance, sincere desire to glorify the power of God, living charity, burning faith, and a hope that cannot be upset. God in his mercy and power, answers this type life. We have seen this gospel many times, but now let us look at it in these qualities.

FERVENT PRAYER--"a certain ruler came up and adored Him". He prayed to Jesus for a miracle before it happened and God was with him. The poor woman prayed after being found out and could not hide her faith, a prayer of thanksgiving.

DEEP HUMILITY--A rich man of importance went to Jesus - with such humility that he did not care about the voices of Pharisees. The poor woman in her humility who would just barley touch the hem of his garments. The poor woman through this act of faith and humility, taught the rich man by her example, how to have faith.

LIFE OF PENANCE--The rich man's penance was the sickness of his daughter, a sorrow of the heart that brought about faith and humility. The poor woman's was the penance of the body and the isolation from society, both emotional and physical.

HOPE THAT NOTHING CAN UPSET--Hope in Jesus to call upon him and a hope that continued even when daughter was died - lead by the hope/faith of the poor woman. First by the woman and second by the rich man. The poor seem to possess God better. They need him more.

DESIRE TO GLORIFY THE POWER OF GOD--Jesus always glorified the father. Two miracles worked side by side, supporting each other, the rich and the poor, the famous and the forgotten. And the last line says; "and his fame went abroad". God's will not allow his name to be taken of this world.

LIVING CHARITY--Through His mercy and power, He heals the sickness of life, the evils, that would lead us away from Him. That is not to say that, these evils cannot be used for good as some who are able to suffer for others, for the greater glory of God.

BURNING FAITH--"Have faith" Jesus said to the rich man. Faith deservers a reward, that is true faith.

Paul says to walk in his model, which is the model of Christ. Walk in the spirit not of the flesh.

If you don't then, you are an enemy of the cross. Embrace the cross, or better yet embrace your cross. Easy to say harder to do. That poor woman in the gospel, because of her disease did not have, her family, her husband, isolated, rejected, shunned by everybody. Through her faith, the mercy of God was realized, a mercy and charity to give her back to her family. The same with the rich man and his faith, his child was returned.

So let us pray to walk in our cross as we have example before us, trusting in God, with faith and hope and all the qualities mention above.
