Sickness and Death
Holy Communion to the Sick The Priest, on entering the sick room with the Most Holy
Sacrament, says:
V.—Peace be to this house,
R.—And to all who dwell therein!
Then, placing the Blessed Sacrament on the corporal, on a
table with lighted candles, he adores upon his knees, all pres-
ent doing likewise; after which he takes Holy Water and
sprinkles the sick person and the bed on which she lies, saying:
Thou shalt sprinkle me with hyssop, 0 Lord,
and I shall be cleansed: Thou shalt wash me,
and I shall be made whiter than snow!
Have mercy on me, 0 God, according to Thy
great mercy.
V.—Glory be to the Father.
R.—As it was.
V.—Pax huic dornui,
R.—Et omnibus habitantibus in iea!
Ant.—Asperges me, Domine, hyssopo et mundabor: lavabis me, et super nivern dealbabor.
Miserere mei Deus, secundum magnam misericordiam tuam.
V.—Gloria Patri et Filio et Spiritui Sancto,
R.—Sicut erat in principio et nunc etsernper et
in saecula .Saculorum. Amen.
Ant.—Thou shalt sprinkle me with hyssop, 0
l.ord, and I shall be cleansed: Thou shalt wash
me and I shall be made whiter than snow!
V.—Our help is in the name of the Lord,
R.—Who hath made heaven and earth.
V.—0 Lord, hear my prayer,
R.—And let my cry come unto Thee!
V.—The Lord be with you!
R.—And with thy spirit!
Ant.—Asperges me, Domine, hyssopo et mundabor: lavabis me, et super nivern dealbabor!
V.—Adjutorium nostrum in nomine Domini,
R.—Qui fecit coelum et terram.
V.—Domine, exaudi orationern meam,
R.—Et clamor meus ad te veniat!
V.—Dominus vobiscum!
R.—Et cum spiritu tuo !
Let us pray
Hear us, 0 holy Lord, almighty Father, eternal
God, vouchsafe to send Thy holy Angel from
heaven to guard, cherish, protect, visit, and de-
fend all that are assembled in this house. Through
Christ our Lord.
R.—Amen.
He then approaches the sick Sister, and, if necessary, hears
her Confession, after which the Confiteor is said.
R.—- Confiteor Deo omnipotenti, beatae Mariae
semper virgini, beato Michaeli Archangelo, beato
Joanni Baptists, sanctis Apostolis Petro et Paulo,
omnibus Sanctis, et tibi, Pater, quia peccavi nimis
cogitatione, verbo, et opere, mea culpa, mea culpa,
mea maxima culpa. Ideo precor beatam Mariam
semper virginern, beatum Michaelem Arch-
angelum, beatum Joannern Baptistam, sanctos
Apostolos Petrum et Paulum, omnes Sanctos, et
te. Pater, orare pro me ad Dominum Deum
nostrum.
V.—Misereatur vestri omnipotens Deus, et
dimissis peccatis vestris, perducat vos ad vitam
aeternam.
R.—Amen.
Then, again adoring on his knees, he takes the Blessed
Sacrament from the pyx, and elevating It, he shows It to the
sick person, saying: Ecce Agnus Dei (Behold the Lamb of
God), and repeating three times: Domine, non sum dignus,
he says:
Receive, sister, the Viaticum of Our Lord Jesus
Christ, that He may preserve thee from the
malignant enemy, and bring thee to life everlasting. Amen.
But if Comunion is not given in the way of Viaticum, be
pronounces the usual words. Corpus Domini nostri.
The priest then washes his fingers in silence, and the ablu-
tion is given to the sick, after which he says:
V.—The Lord be with you,
R.—And with thy spirit!
V.—Dominus vobiscum,
R—- Et cum spiritu tuo !
Let us pray
0 holy Lord, almighty Father, eternal God, we
earnestly beseech Thee that the most sacred Body
of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, which our
sister hath now received, may be to her an eternal
remedy both of body and soul: Who liveth and
reigneth with Thee, in the unity, of the Holy
Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.
These things done, if a particle of the Blessed Sacrament
remains, he genuflects, rises, and taking the pyx with the
Blessed Sacrament, he makes with It the sign of the cross
over the sick person in silence. Returning to the church, he
recites Psalm cxiviii, and other psalms and hymns, as time
allows; also the following:
V.—-Thou didst give them bread from heaven
(Alleluia).
R.—Containing in itself all sweetness (Alleluia).
V.—0 Lord, hear my prayer,
R.—And let my cry come to Thee!
V.—The Lord be. with you!
R.—And with thy spirit!
Let us pray
0 God, who under a wonderful Sacrament hast
left us a memorial of Thy Passion; grant us the
V.—Panern de coelo prsestitisti eis (Alleluia).
R.—Omne delectamentum in se habentem (Alleluia).
V.—Domine, exaudi orationern meam,
R.—Et clamor meus ad te veniat.
V.—Dominus vobiscum.
R.—Et cum spiritu tuo.
grace, we beseech Thee, so to venerate the sacred
mysteries of Thy Body and Blood, that we may
ever feel within us the fruit of Thy redemption.
Who livest, etc. Amen.
If no particle of the Blessed Sacrament remains, the Priest
blesses the sick Sister with his hand in the usual way.
