SACRED HEART PRAYERS FOR MASS
PRAYERS TO THE SACRED HEART
FOR THE TIME OF HOLY MASS
AT THE FOOT OF THE ALTAR
On the steps of Thy altar, I prostrate myself,
and appear with the Priest before Thee. 0 my
God, look down upon me and have mercy. Judge
me not according to my crimes, but according to
Thy exceeding mercy, and by Thy powerful aid
free me from the many and great dangers which
threaten my soul, so that I may one day see Thee
face to face.
Yes, from the depths of my heart, I cry to
Thee, 0 Lord. 0 Lord, hear my prayer, that I
may find mercy before Thee. Full of compunction, I implore Thy mercy, 0 God, and confess my
guilt before the Blessed Virgin Mary, the holy
Apostles Peter and Paul, before heaven and earth,
and all the Saints. Yes, 0 my God, I have sinned,
and am sorry, deeply sorry for my sins. But one
hope remains, that Jesus will reconcile me to
Thee. 0 Divine Heart, sanctify me by humility
and contrition, that I may partake of this sacrifice of reconciliation and love.
WHEN THE PRIEST ASCENDS THE STEPS
Arise, my soul, and praise the Lord, because He
has done great things to thee. May my prayer,
like incense, ascend to heaven, 0 Lord, and may
my petitions, aided by the prayers of the Saints,
be heard. Through Jesus Christ, Our Lord. Amen.
INTROIT
In a spirit of confidence and hope, I begin
with the word of Holy Writ, which thus bears
testimony to Thy Love, my Savior:
He will have mercy according the multitude
of His mercies; for He hath not willingly afflicted,
nor cast off the children of men. The Lord is
good to them that hope in Him, to the soul that
seeketh Him. Alleluia! Alleluia!
Forever will I sing Thy mercies, 0 Lord,
from generation to generation.
GLORIA
0 Divine Heart! let me join in the joyful
hymn of the Angels.
Glory be to God on high, and on earth peace
to men of good will! We praise Thee; we bless
Thee; we adore Thee; we glorify Thee; we
give Thee thanks for Thy great glory, 0 Lord
God, heavenly King, God the Father Almighty.
0 Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son,
0 Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father
Who takest away the sins of the world, have
mercy on us: Thou, Who takest away the sins
of the world, receive our prayer! Thou, Who
sittest at the right hand of the Father, have
mercy on us. For Thou only art holy! Thou only
art Lord! Thou only, 0 Jesus Christ, with the
Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God
the Father! Amen.
0 Lord, hear my prayer!
And let my cry come unto Thee.
COLLECT
Grant, we beseech Thee, Almighty God, that
we who confide in the Sacred Heart of Thy beloved Son; and who honor in it the chief benefits of His love; may enjoy these same favors,
and faithfully use them for our welfare. Through
Christ Our Lord. Amen.
0 God, Who for the salvation of sinners, the
consolation of the afflicted, and the joy of all
the elect, hast made the Immaculate Heart of
Mary so similar to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in
sanctity, mercy and love, graciously grant that
I may daily become more and more similar to
the Immaculate Heart of Mary, in virtue and
merits. Through Christ Our Lord. Amen.
EPISTLE
From the Epistle of St. Paul to the Ephesians,
Chapter 3. Brethren, to me, the last of all the Saints, is
given this grace to preach among the Gentiles
the unsearchable riches of Christ, and to enlighten all men, that they may see what is the
dispensation of the mystery, which hath been
hidden from eternity in God, Who created all
things. For this cause I bow my knees
to the Father of Our Lord Jesus Christ, of
Whom all paternity in Heaven and earth is
named, that He would grant you, according to
the riches of His glory, to be strengthened by
His Spirit with might unto the inward man, that
Christ may dwell by faith in your hearts, that
being rooted and founded in charity, you may
be able to comprehend with all the Saints what
is the breadth and length and height and depth:
to know also the charity of Christ which surpasses all knowledge.
GRADUAL
0 all ye that pass by the way, attend, and
see if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow.
Having loved His own who were in the world,
He loved them unto the end. Alleluia ! Alleluia!
BEFORE THE GOSPEL
0 God, Who didst cleanse the lips of Thy
prophet Isaias with a burning coal, cleanse my
heart, also, and my soul, that I may be worthy
to hear the holy word, and bless me that I may
understand it for my salvation. Amen. GOSPEL
The Lord be with us,
And Jesus in our hearts. From the Gospel of St. John, Chapter 19.
Then the Jews, because it was the parasceve,
that the bodies might not remain upon the cross on
the Sabbath Day (for this was a great Sabbath
Day), besought Pilate that their legs might be
broken, and that they might be taken away.
The soldiers, therefore, came, and they broke the
legs of the first, and of the other that was crucified with Him. But when they came to Jesus,
and saw that He was already dead, they did not
break His legs. But one of the soldiers opened
His side with a spear, and immediately there
came out blood and water. And he that saw it
gave testimony: and his testimony is true.
May my whole life, 0 Jesus, bear testimony to
Thee and to Thy Sacred Heart.
If the Creed is not said by the Priest, omit it, and begin
the prayers at the Offertory, CREED
0 my God and Saviour, from my heart I exclaim and confess with holy Mother Church:
I believe in one God, the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth, and of all things
visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus
Christ, the onlybegotten Son of God and born
of the Father before all ages; God of God; Light
of Light; true God of true God; begotten, not
made; consubstantial with the Father; by Whom
all things were made. Who for us men, and for
our salvation, came down from heaven, and was
incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary;
and was made man. He was crucified also for
us, suffered under Pontius Pilate, and was buried,
and the third day He rose again, according to
the Scriptures; and ascended into heaven, sitteth
at the right hand of the Father; and shall come
again with glory to judge the living and the
dead; of Whose kingdom there shall be no end.
And I believe in the Holy Ghost, Lord and
Giver of life, Who proceedeth from the Father
and the Son: Who together with the Father
and the Son is adored and glorified; Who spoke
by the prophets.
And One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic
Church. I confess one Baptism for the remission of sins. And I look for the resurrection of
the dead, and the life of the world to come,
Amen. The Lord be with us,
And Jesus in our hearts, OFFERTORY
My Lord and my God! In the simplicity of my
heart I have joyfully offered Thee everything,
and have seen Thy people bringing sacrifices to
Thee with great rejoicing. 0 God of Israel!
Preserve this inclination in their hearts. Alleluia !
WHEN THE PRIEST UNCOVERS THE CHALICE
Accept, 0 Lord, this offering! Accept also with this host and this
chalice, myself, my heart,
and whatever is mine. With the same dispositions with which the Sacred Heart of Jesus
offered Thee this sacrifice of love for the first
time at the Last Supper, I offer to Thee, my
God, myself with Him, my heart in union with
His. Cleanse me, 0 Lord, from all my sins:
and thus may my offering, joined to His, be
acceptable to Thee, 0 most Sacred Trinity. Hear,
0 God, the prayer of the priest, and the prayer
which Thy holy Church offers Thee by His
lips.
These, my prayers and petitions, I unite with
the prayers of all the faithful, particularly of
those who honor Thy Divine Heart in an especial
manner, and who attend Mass, now, both here
and throughout the entire world.
SECRET
Grant, we beseech Thee, 0 God, that the Holy
Spirit may kindle in us the fire of Thy love,
which inflamed the Sacred Heart of Thy Son,
and which was brought into the world and
everywhere spread by Jesus Christ. Who liveth
and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy
Ghost, God, world without end. Amen.
Shield us, 0 Lord, who now bring Thee the
sacrifice of Thy Heart; and that our hearts may
be the better prepared, fill us with that love
which ever burned in the heart of Thy Virgin
Mother, 0 Jesus. Who liveth and reignest with
God the Father, in the unity of the Holy Ghost,
God, world without end. Amen.
PREFACE
Let every living thing praise the Lord. With
hearts raised to heaven, we praise and glorify
Thee, 0 God, and give Thee thanks, through
Christ Our Lord, Who in this sacrifice, has given his His own Heart as a pledge of His promises.
Therefore, uniting our voices to those of the
Angels, and Archangels, Thrones and Dominations, Cherubim and Seraphim, and all the powers
of heaven, we exclaim:
Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God of Hosts!
Holy is the divine Heart of Jesus and the entire world is full of its love and its glory!
CANON
0 my knees, humbled to the dust, I raise my
eyes to heaven, where my Jesus resides, interceding as Mediator for me and the entire world,
showing Thee, 0 Eternal Father, His five
Wounds, especially that of His Sacred Heart,
and thus, as the eternal highpriest, reconciling
us with Thee.
Bless this sacrifice, 0 Lord, and graciously
look down from the throne of Thy infinite mercy
on Thy whole Church on earth, particularly on
its visible Head, the present Pope (Name), on
all Bishops, Priests, deacons, on the clergy, on
all temporal and spiritual authorities; bless Thy
entire Church. May this sacrifice prove beneficial to all. Remember, especially, I beseech
Thee, 0 Lord, and have mercy on:
Recall those for whom you wish to pray.
For these and for all whose faith and devotion
are known to Thee, and for whom Thou wishest
us to offer this holy sacrifice, I supplicate Thee, Oh God, and unite my prayers with the prayers
and merits of the glorious and ever virgin, Mary,
Mother of God, of the holy Apostles, Peter and Paul, and of all the
other apostles, martyrs, confessors and virgins, for their honor, that all of
us may become but one family. Through Christ Our Lord. May they aid
me and assist my devotion, for already heaven is open and Jesus
descends from His throne of grace on this altar.
CONSECRATION
That mystery of love which was consummated,
for the first time at the Last Supper, at Jerusalem, that sacrifice of which Thou, my
Savior,
hast said: Do this in commemoration of me, is
about to be renewed really and truly. At this
moment are fulfilled these words of consolation:
Behold I am with you to the end of the world.
Yes, on the evening before He suffered, giving
Himself up as a victim for our love, Jesus took
bread into His holy and venerable Hands, and,
with His eyes lifted up towards heaven, having
given thanks to God, His Almighty Father, did
bless and break the bread saying: THIS is MY
BODY.
ELEVATION OF THE HOST
Jesus, my God and my Saviour, I adore Thee!
Mercifully look down, 0 Eternal Father, and
hear me; for it is Thine only, Thy beloved Son!
Look down on His Heart, and have mercy on
me!
Then Jesus, taking also the chalice into His
holy and venerable Hands, and giving thanks,
blessed it, saying: THIS is THE CHALICE OF MY
BLOOD, OF THE NEW TESTAMENT, WHICH SHALL
BE SHED FOR YOU AND FOR MANY TO THE REMISSION OF SINS.
ELEVATION OF THE CHALICE
Jesus, my God and Saviour, I adore Thy Most
Sacred Blood!
Mercifully look down, 0 Eternal Father, on
the Blood of Thy Son, the Blood of His Sacred
Heart; save, hear and have mercy on me.
Lord Jesus! for Thee I live; Jesus, for Thee
I would die; Jesus, I am Thine, living and dead.
Amen.
AFTER THE CONSECRATION
Now, Thou art really present on this altar,
Jesus my love and my only desire! Blessed be
this moment, blessed and glorified Thy infinite
mercy, blessed Thy entire life. Thy Passion and
Death, Thy glorious Resurrection and Ascension, blessed be all that Thou didst on earth for
man's salvation, blessed and praised forever be
Thy infinite glory. Thus, humbly and gratefully, we offer Thy Body and Blood to God the
Father. How could He see Thee, on the altar,
a victim for our sins, and not have mercy on us?
Yes, Eternal Father, look down from heaven
and accept this offering by the hand of Thy
angel, just as Thou didst graciously accept the
offering of Abel, and that of Thy highpriest
Melchisedech, not only for all the living, but
likewise for all the dead, for all those souls who
are enduring the punishment of their sins in the
terrible flames of Purgatory.
Imagine that Purgatory is laid open to your eyes;
hear and see how the poor souls are crying to you for aid.
Beg of Jesus that He may pour a few drops of His Sacred
Blood from the altar into those flames for their relief.
Name those for whom you are bound to pray. Pray also
for those who have none to pray for them; who have most
to suffer; who are nearest liberation; who, whilst on earth.
cherished a particular devotion to the Blessed Virgin, the
Blessed Sacrament, and the Sacred Heart of Jesus; in general, for all those for whom it pleases God that you should
pray. Let all this be done briefly and mentally, that you
may follow the priest. Be mindful, 0 most bountiful God, of these
and all other souls in Purgatory, according to
the greatness of Thy mercy. From this altar
may the Blood of Christ flow from His Divine
Heart into those flames, and bring those souls
relief, consolation, and speedy liberation, that
they may be with Thee, together with St. Stephen,
St. Ignatius, St. Catherine, St. Cecilia, and all
the Saints. Unite all of those who are here now
united in the heart of Thy Son, and let our portion be with Thine elect. Through Christ Our
Lord.
Through Him, and with Him, and in Him,
glory be to the Almighty Father, with God the
Holy Ghost, forever. Amen.
PATER NOSTER
Admonished and taught by Him, Thy only Son,
and considering Him as our Paschal Lamb, we
presume to raise our eyes to heaven and pray to
Thee in His words:
Our Father Who art in heaven, hallowed be
Thy name ! Thy kingdom come! Thy will be done
on earth, as it is in Heaven! Give us this day our
daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we
forgive them who trespass against us; and lead us
not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Amen.
Deliver us, 0 Lord, from all the evils of body
and soul; ward off all temporal disaster, unless it
be for our eternal welfare; grant us strength in
temptation, and give us true compunction for
our sins, so that we may be converted. Grant
us peace now and forever, and deliver us from
sin, the only evil. Through the same Christ Our
Lord. Amen.
AGNUS DEI
Lamb of God, Who takest away the sins of the world, through the love
of Thy
have mercy on us!
Lamb of God, Who takest away the sins of the world, through the love
of Thy
have mercy on us!
Lamb of God, Who takest away the sins of the world, through the love
of Thy
grant us Thy peace !
PRAYERS BEFORE COMMUNION
Lord Jesus, Who didst say to Thine Apostles: My peace I give you, My
peace I leave to you. regard not my sins, but the faith of Thy
Church; unite her in the communion of the faithful, and give my soul
the kiss of reconciliation, peace and love, before I dare to receive
Thee spiritually.
Lord Jesus, Son of the living God, Who, according to the will of
Thy Father, through the cooperation of the Holy Ghost, hast, by Thy
death, redeemed the world, deliver me by this most sacred Body and
Blood from all my iniquities, that I may increase in virtue and
sanctity, and never be separated from Thee. May this Sacrament of
Thy love, which I presume to receive spiritually with the priest,
not turn to my judgment, but may it be to me a remedy both for soul
and body, through Thee, my Jesus. Amen.
And now, longing to receive Thee, I exclaim from the bottom of my
heart:
Lord, I am not worthy Thou shouldst enter under my roof! say but the
word, and my soul shall be healed.
Lord, I am not worthy Thou shouldst enter under my roof! say but the
word, and my soul shall be healed.
Lord, I am not worthy Thou shouldst enter under my roof! say but the
word, and my soul shall be healed. COMMUNION
Jesus, my Savior and my Love, I am not worthy, I never was and
never will be; for who could be worthy to receive Thee, Who art
truly God! But since, in the excess of Thy love, it pleases Thee to
dwell among men, I open my heart to receive Thee. Come, 0 my Jesus,
come at least spiritually into my heart, and unite it wholly with
Thine.
If you are not going to Holy Communion, imagine now that the
Blessed Virgin, your Guardian Angel, some Saint, or Christ Himself,
brings you a Particle from the altar, which you reverently receive.
Then resign yourself for some moments to the emotions of your love,
as if you had really communicated.
In the same manner, spiritually receive the chalice of the Blood
from the priest, and beg of Jesus that, for the sake of the love of
His Heart, He may impart to you all those favors which He has
eternally predestined to give you at this Mass.
0 my Jesus, would that I could fully share in the grace of this
and of all the several Masses which have been or will be said from
the beginning to the end of the world. Therefore, I exclaim, in the
words of The Holy Catholic Church: Taste and see, how sweet is the
Lord. His mercy endureth forever! Alleluia!
POST COMMUNION
Refreshed by this most holy Sacrament, we beg of Thee, 0 Lord Jesus
Christ, that we, who have tasted the sweetness of Thy Heart, may
henceforth, freed from sin, become more and more like to Thee in
virtue. Who livest and reignest with God the Father in the unity of
the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen.
0 Jesus, Who didst so often rejoice the heart of Thy Virgin
Mother in this mystery of Thy love, grant, we beseech Thee, that in
union with her heart, we may henceforth love Thee above all things.
Who livest and reignest with God the Father, in the unity of the
Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen. The Lord be with us, And
Jesus in our hearts !
BLESSING
In conclusion bless me, 0 Lord, and my devotion. Accept all to Thy
glory, and thus may the blessing of the priest bring down upon me
the blessing of Thy Heart, by the sign of the Holy Cross, now and
forever, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy
Ghost. Amen.
LAST GOSPEL
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the
Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things
were made by Him, and without Him was made nothing that was made. In
Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light
shineth in darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. This man came
for a witness, to give testimony of the Light, that all men might
believe through him. He was not the Light, but was to give testimony
of the Light. That was the true Light which enlighteneth every man
that cometh into this world.
He was in the world, and the world was made by Him, and the world
knew Him not. He came unto His own, and His own received Him not.
But as many as received Him, He gave them the power to be made
the Sons of God, to them that believed in His Name, who are born not
of the blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man;
but of God. And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us, and we
saw His glory, the glory as it were of the only begotten of the
Father, full of grace and truth.
THANKSGIVING AFTER MASS
I thank Thee, my Savior, because Thou hast permitted me to hear this
holy Mass, and thus to Worship Thy most Sacred Heart. I thank Thee
for all the Masses which have been said for so many centuries to the
present day, by so many priests, in so many churches, on so many
altars; for every host consecrated by Thy word, for every drop of
Blood; but, above all, for this holy sacrifice of the Mass at which
I have had the happiness to assist this day.
Would that I had been animated by all the devotion which so holy
a sacrifice demands! Do Thou, most bountiful Jesus, supply what has
been deficient in me, and seal my heart with Thy grace, that I may
never again lose all the merits which I have derived from this holy
sacrifice, for time and eternity.
Thus strengthened and consoled, for Thy greater honor, I will
proceed to my daily labor; my heart, however, remains here with
Thee, my Jesus!
May Thy blessing accompany my every step, until I have again the
happiness of hearing Mass. No day shall ever pass without my
endeavoring to enjoy this blessing. It aids and consoles me
throughout the day. Grant, my Savior, that I may today feel all the
effects of this holy sacrifice, through Thee, Who art my Redeemer
and Mediator. Amen. |
